my brain is thin from altitude sickness here at 8000 feet. we’ve been in beaver creek, colorado for about 24 hours now and i expect to feel normal soon. any minute now!
xmas was a blast in maryland, and i had a wonderful time getting to know more than a dozen of monica’s extremely colorful and amazingly welcoming dominican side of the family. i learned quite a few things in maryland:
1. if you have to clean 20 people’s worth of dishes, blasting salsa and merengue helps immensely.
2. cleaning 20 people’s worth of dishes goes a LONG way towards ingratiating yourself with a bevy of tias.
3. a yellow tortoise is a fun pet, and a plastic kiddy pool makes a great pen for her.
4. you can truthfully say “i went to see sherlock holmes twice on xmas day” without actually having seen a movie (it was sold out both times).
5. politeness to the new guy does not extend to the board game table.
6. it’s easy to get creeped out while sleeping in a room with a twilight poster over the bed.
7. monica’s family is awesome.
we’re here in colorado now, and staying through the new year. this place will be educational too. i learned today that thirty minutes of practice does not a snowboarder make. but i really do look smooth in all my gear.
it gets nice and silent here in the mountains! i hope every one in my family, and all of my friends, scattered and stretched far and wide, are having an awesome holiday weekend.
